Ethical guidelines for research

Cybernauterne conducts Open Source Investigations and analyses large sets of online data often containing sensitive or personal information.

These are our ethical guidelines on conducting OSINT research and analysis on large datasets from social media, closed forums or public websites.

Informed Consent

We aim to seek consent from individuals before collecting, using, or disseminating their personal information, whenever feasible. This is particularly relevant when dealing with sensitive information or in cases involving vulnerable individuals. However, it is important to acknowledge that obtaining consent may not always be practical or possible, especially when dealing with publicly available information. In many cases we collect and analyse data on hateful and harmful online communities, who, by their very nature, are invested in thwarting any research and investigations into their activities. In such situations, we will exercise responsible and ethical use of the collected data, ensuring that it serves a legitimate purpose and aligns with applicable laws and regulations.

Data Accuracy and Integrity

Maintaining the accuracy and integrity of collected data is a cornerstone of our research. We aim to verify the information obtained from open sources to the best of our abilities before utilising or reporting it. Relying on unverified or uncorroborated information can lead to the dissemination of false or misleading data, potentially causing harm to individuals or organisations. Cross-referencing data from multiple reliable sources helps us ensure accuracy and promotes responsible and ethical conduct. We will rather omit information from an unreliable source than risk spreading inaccuracies.

Minimization of Harm

While the primary goal is to uncover information about the topics we research, it is vital to avoid causing unnecessary harm to individuals or communities. This includes refraining from engaging in harassment, defamation, or invasion of privacy. We will exercise caution in how they interpret and present our findings, ensuring that they do not contribute to the spread of misinformation or the unjustified targeting of individuals. By balancing the need for information with sensitivity towards potential harm, we will uphold ethical conduct throughout our research processes.

Respect for Cultural and Social Norms

OSINT investigations often span diverse cultures and societies. It is imperative for investigators to understand and respect cultural and social norms while gathering and interpreting information. Actions or statements that may be acceptable in one culture could be offensive or inappropriate in another. Investigators must be culturally sensitive, taking into account the nuances and sensitivities of different communities.

Conclusion

In regards to our research, legal compliance and ethical considerations are inextricably intertwined. We remain vigilant about adhering to privacy laws, respecting intellectual property rights, and abiding by website policies. Simultaneously, we will prioritise informed consent, data accuracy, minimization of harm, and respect for cultural and social norms. We aim to harness the power of open source intelligence and big data analysis, while upholding the principles of fairness, responsibility, and respect for individual rights.
